Mountain Rescue Team History

During the 1960’s, the mountain rescue situation in South Eryri was very primitive. In 1986, members from the ‘Cambrian Rambling Club’ came to set up ‘Rhinog Rescue Team’ under the supervision of Barry Ellis.

In 1973, Moelwyn Rescue Team was set up in the Blaenau Ffestiniog area under the supervision of Tom Thomas. Both teams were very busy during the 70’s and 80’s and then in 1991, after much discussion, it was decided that both teams would merge as one.

South Snowdonia Search and Rescue Team was used as a new name for the team. The first leader and supervisor leading the team was ‘Topper Brown, with Barry Ellis as his second in command.

In 1998, the team was fortunate enough to receive the old Cae Adda school building, by Trawsfynydd Lake for a period of 25 years by Magnox. After a lot work altering the building to ensure it was fit for purpose, it was officially opened on the 5th of August, 200 by Michael Argent, chief constable of North Wales Police.

The team now have a home!

Today, in 2012, the team is run under the supervision of Dafydd Griffiths.

Yn ystod y 60au, cyntefig iawn oedd sefyllfa Achub mynydd yn Ne Eryri hyd nes, yn 1986 daeth aelodau o’r Cambrian Rambling Club o’r Bermo ynghyd I sefydlu ‘Tim Achub Rhinog’ o dan arweiniad Barry Ellis.

Yn 1973 sefydlwyd Tim Achub Moelwyn yn ardal Blaenau Ffestiniog dan arweiniad y diweddar Tom Thomas. Bu’r ddau dim yn brysyr iawn trwy gydol 70 au ar 80au ac yn 1991, ar ol hir drafod, cyfynwyd y ddau dim.

Mabwysiadwyd yr enw Tim Achub a Chwilio De Eryri a’r arweinydd cyntaf oedd’ Topper’ Brown gyda Barry Ellis yn ddirpwy.

Yn 1998 bu’r tim yn ffodus o gael les 25 mlynedd ar hen ysgoldy Cae Adda ger Llyn Trawsfynydd gan gwmni Magnox. Ar ol llawer o waith gan yr aelodau yn addasu’r adeilad, agorwyd y ganolfan yn swyddogol ar Awst 5ed 2000 gan Michael Argent, prif Gwnstabl Heddlu Gogledd Cymru.

Roedd gan y tim Gartref!

Heddiw ym 2012 o dan Arweiniad Dafydd Griffiths.
